Yu-Chen System – Ultra-Pure Water (UPW) System Modernization Success Story
A leading semiconductor fab’s Ultra-Pure Water (UPW) system was originally controlled by an aging Mitsubishi A-Series PLC platform that had been in operation for over 20 years. With no remaining system integrators capable of supporting the legacy Mitsubishi hardware, most operations had degraded to semi-automatic mode, creating substantial operational risk.
The standalone, obsolescent system exposed the customer to unacceptable downtime risk — sudden, unannounced shutdowns were a real possibility. Apart from Yu-Chen System (YCS), virtually no SI firm was willing to undertake full replacement of the Mitsubishi PLCs due to the extreme risk associated with an always-on UPW system that cannot tolerate unplanned outages.
YCS engineers invested significant effort in reverse-engineering and deeply understanding the legacy Mitsubishi PLC logic. We then developed detailed process flow diagrams, performed Allen-Bradley PLC programming (using ControlLogix platform), conducted rigorous testing, and executed on-site commissioning & debugging.
The modernized architecture consists of:
– 6 sets of Allen-Bradley ControlLogix (CLX) PLCs
– Dozens of Allen-Bradley PowerFlex 753 drives dedicated to critical water pump applications
The entire migration project spanned approximately 9 months from kick-off to full cutover. The new system has been successfully commissioned and is operating reliably with zero unplanned downtime to date.
