How Are Harmonics Generated in Power Systems?
Harmonics in power systems are caused by nonlinear loads or power sources. When devices in the power system—such as computers, inverters, and UPS systems—operate, their current waveforms are no longer pure sine waves. Instead, they include frequencies that are multiples of the fundamental frequency (like 50Hz or 60Hz); these additional frequencies are the harmonics. Nonlinear loads distort the current waveform, generating harmonic components at various frequencies. These harmonics can adversely affect the power system and connected equipment, leading to increased energy consumption, reduced equipment lifespan, system distortion, and even decreased production yield.
Taipower Regulations on Harmonic Control
To effectively regulate the harmonic current injected into the power system by users and power generation companies, and to maintain high power quality, Taipower mandates that any new or additional load with a total capacity of 300 kVA or more must be reviewed by a licensed electrical engineer or qualified professional. Only after approval from Taipower will power supply be provided!
